New superintendent: Buccaneer becomes a Pirate
| GALENA-Dr. Dale Greimann has accepted the offer by the Galena School Board to become the next Galena School superintendent.
At about 9:15 p.m. the Galena School Board received the fax they were waiting for. Dr. Dale Greimann returned the contract offered to him following a brief executive session on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

After prom group plans meeting
| GALENA-The After Prom 2007 committee will have a meeting on Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. to further its plans for the After Prom party in May. The meeting will take place at the Galena Middle School and parents of Galena High School juniors and seniors are welcome to attend.
Fund-raising efforts are well-underway. Businesses, organizations, or individuals interested in sponsoring this worthwhile event are encouraged to send donations to Lara LeGrand, 9710 Little Doe Run, Galena, IL, 61036. The committee appreciates all donations received to date.

River Ridge takes WYSE crown
| River Ridge High School won first place team and nine individual medals at the regional competition of the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) competition held at Highland Community College, Feb. 8.
Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics.
Team standings for the competition in the division are: River Ridge, first; East Dubuque, second; Scales Mound, third; Stockton, fourth; Aquin, fifth; and Galena, sixth.

Musical notes
| GALENA-Several students participated in the Illinois Grade School Music Association, Northern Division (IGSMA) on Saturday Feb. 17 at Rockford Lutheran School. They performed for a judge who gave them a rating, encouraging suggestions and constructive criticism.

Hornet brain power
| On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Scales Mound Varsity Scholastic Bowl team ventured to Rock Falls to participate in the 2007 Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl. The Masons sponsor the regional and state competitions to provide positive recognition for academic excellence. The double-elimination tournament features scholarship awards for the top four places and the consolation bracket winners, courtesy of the Illinois Masons.

Schools plan screening
| The River Ridge School District 210 will hold its annual preschool screening for children up to five on March 8 and 9 and kindergarten screening on March 7. The child's overall development will be checked, including language, concepts, motor skills, and vision and hearing.
There is no charge for this service. All children should participate. The screening is sponsored by the River Ridge School District 210, Northwest Special Education Cooperative, and the Regional Office of Education. Tuesday, February 27, 2007

A day of editing
| What a day-a day of editing, that is! The seventh graders at River Ridge Middle School are writing a book, and they invited Mr. Paul Sipiera, the author of 29 books, including "Meteorites," to join them in their quest to write a book about the oral histories of local senior citizens.
Sipiera is a professor of geology and astronomy at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine. He participated in the United States Arctic Research Program during the 1983-1984 field season as part of the Antarctic Search for Meteorites Program. His professional activities include membership in the Explores Club, the New Zealand Antarctic Society, and serving as president of the Planetary Studies Foundation.

New superintendent?
| GALENA-According to Galena School Board President Fred Baltz, the meeting set for Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. is for possible approval and extension of a contract to the new superintendent of schools.
Following a nearly hour long executive session on Wednesday, Feb. 21 to discuss the new superintendent's proposed contract, the Galena School Board began their regular monthly meeting lead by vice president Gordy Montgomery.

Citizen's Advisory Committee meets

GALENA-The newly-appointed organization had more questions than answers at the first Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting, Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Galena High School.
Lead by Galena School Board President Fred Baltz, the group elected Drew Townsend and David Eaton as co-chairs of the committee and Keith Ahlvin as secretary.
