Galena Artists' Guild announces membership month
GALENA-The Galena Artists' Guild Inc. has designated March as Membership Month and will hold a Meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at the Galena Elks Club, 123 N. Main St.

"At this meeting, we'll have an open discussion of guild activities, including our new Gallery at 324 Spring Street, which will have its Grand Opening in May," reports guild president Janet Checker. "We'll also review our 2007 budget, so we hope as many members and potential members as possible will be able to attend."

Several local artists exhibit at Dubuque Museum of Art
DUBUQUE, Iowa-Ten Jo Daviess County artists have been accepted for the biennial juried exhibit at the Dubuque Museum of Art in Dubuque, Iowa.

Originally slated as a tri-annual invitational, this now event takes place every other year to maximize exhibition opportunities for regional artists. Artists within 200 miles of the museum were invited to submit their work for consideration by guest juror, Alan Z. Aiches, an art museum professional for over 25 years. Aiches established Aiches Design in Washington D.C. in 1998 and serves as an adjunct curator at the National Building Museum.

Ready for a challenge?
ELIZABETH-The Elizabeth Historical Society will hold its fifth annual Trivia Challenge on Saturday, March 24, at the Elizabeth Community Building, starting at 7 p.m.

Teams of four compete in eight rounds of trivia questions. Team members will collectively respond during timed rounds with written answers to questions on eight different topics. Two of the eight topics are "champions" and "numbers." Prizes will be awarded to the top ten teams correctly answering the most questions. Over $800 in prizes will be awarded.

Film, discussion planned
GALENA-The Galena Public Library will present a film and discussion, "WHINSEC (formerly School of the Americas What is its Role?") on Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m.

Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), located at Ft. Benning, Ga., is a training school for Latin American and Caribbean military conducted by U.S. Army personnel.

Are you music minded?
GALENA-Assisting visitors to appreciate and enjoy the "New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music" experience at the Galena History Museum will be a team of volunteer docents. A docent's task is to be a tour guide, encouraging visitors to think about the subject and to encourage meaningful reflection and discussion.

A docent training session, led by Patricia Miller, executive director of the Illinois Heritage Association, will use a handbook provided by the Smithsonian Institute to lead docents through the exhibition-section by section. Docents are not expected to be expert curators; the training will make them familiar and comfortable with the exhibition story line.

'Shoot Out with the Cops'
The Jo Daviess County Juvenile Justice Council announces the first annual, "Shoot Out with the Cops" Fundraiser. Area law enforcement and Court Officials will play the local high school varsity basketball teams. Games start at 7 p.m. The schedule is:

-March 14-Warren High School.

-March 28-Galena High School.

-March 29-River Ridge High School.

-April 3-Stockton High School.

-April 25-Scales Mound High School.

March story hours planned
ELIZABETH-The Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau Education Committee invites children three through third grade to come to the local libraries and celebrate National Ag Week.

This month's topic for Little Pokes story hour will be Illinois agriculture. The events will be held at Stockton Township Library on Saturday, March 10 at 9:15 a.m. and the Warren Public Library that same morning at 10:30 a.m.

Fireman's dance set for March 17
GALENA-The Galena Fire Department are still selling tickets for their annual dance which will be held Saturday, March 17 at Turner Hall from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

The fire department chose local favorite, "Sunshine" to play during the dance. Soft drinks will be provided. Attendees are reminded that no alcohol will be sold at the event. Guests are welcome to bring coolers with their own beverages. World Day of Prayer

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
GALENA-The first annual booth event "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun...and Free Stuff!" sponsored by the Professional Women's Initiative will be April 11 from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Ramada of Galena.

PWI promises that this is more than just another business expo. This will be an event for area businesses and organizations to showcase their products and services.
